Warner Bros. Closes Multiple Studios, Cancels Long-Awaited Game

Warner Bros. Games has officially announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated Wonder Woman game. The project, which was first revealed in 2021 and was being developed by Monolith Productions, had been in development for years. However, after a long period without significant updates, the company decided to halt the project. Reports had previously suggested that the game would undergo a major overhaul in 2024, but it will no longer see the light of day.

Alongside this cancellation, Warner Bros. Games also confirmed the closure of three of its studios as part of broader restructuring efforts. The gaming industry has been facing a difficult period recently, with multiple companies laying off employees, canceling projects, and shutting down studios. This latest decision by Warner Bros. Games adds to the growing list of industry setbacks.

Despite these challenges, the company stated that it remains committed to delivering high-quality gaming experiences through its ongoing projects. However, for fans who had been eagerly awaiting Wonder Woman, this news marks the end of a long wait filled with uncertainty.

Multiple studios have also been closed

Along with the cancellation of the Wonder Woman game, Warner Bros. Games has also confirmed the shutdown of several of its studios. Among them is Monolith Productions, the very team behind the Wonder Woman project. Founded in 1994 and acquired by Warner Bros. in 2004, Monolith had a long history in game development, most notably known for the Middle-earth: Shadow series.

Additionally, Player First Games, the studio responsible for the now-canceled Multiversus, and Warner Bros. San Diego, which specialized in mobile and free-to-play titles, have also been shut down. These closures mark a significant shift in Warner Bros. Games’ strategy.

The company stated that it aims to concentrate its resources on a select group of major franchises. These include Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, Batman, and other DC Comics properties. This restructuring indicates a focused effort on well-established brands, likely to ensure long-term success in an increasingly competitive gaming industry.
